GNOME for my Grandmother
March 14, 2010 – 2:55 pmAnd another desktop post: I recently, I got new laptop for my work and I decided to reinstall my old laptop (hey, it is not THAT old, it is HP nx6125, 64bit 2.2GHz, 2GB RAM, 80GB HDD, 1400x1050 resolution!) so that my grandmother could use it: she is used to something horrible (500 MB RAM) with MS Windows 2000 on it. What do you think, will she like it? For more, have a look at http://ubuntu.online02.com/node/14, it was maybe too simple to get in this shape.

March 14, 2010 – 2:38 pmWell, I gave it a try and installed Kubuntu recelntly on my new working notebook. I can say, that I liked the integration of all applications. Namely kontact was nice example, having everything under hood (mail, calendar, working time, tasks AND RSS), kopete integrated everything INCLUDING skype. There were several thinks, which did not work, but I could live with them (network manager for example). But by the time, the general look'n'feel of the whole environment was not the one, I would expect. And overall, the general integration was not that perfect, as it seemed to be at the beginning. Kopete does not support IRC for example, I like GNOME virtual file system, which makes it possible for me to brows any remote server sytem in a seem less way, as well as for example nokia phone connected through bluetooth. March 6, 2010 – 10:08 pmMagistrát nezvládá připomínky. Jsem dalek tvrdit, že technologie je samospasitelná, ale věřím, že s její pomocí lze leccos urychlit. Připomínky jsem nepodával, takže trochu vařím z vody. Našel jsem někde text, podle kterého by snad mělo být možné zadávat bodově lokalitu, ke které připomínku máte. My jsme ale účastni doufám že zajímavého projektu, který by měl podobné věci usnadnit. Plan4all je evropský projekt, zabývající se harmonizací územních plánů napříč EU. Idea je asi taková, že se ze všech národních územních plánů vytvoří jakási společná idea, která bude přes Evropu stejná, takže člověk z jednoho státu se v základu vyzná v plánu státu sousedního (pro konkrétní úlohy samozřejmě bude muset znát národná špecifíká, tohle je pro první orientaci). Teď vznikají datové modely a metadatové profily, první portál je na portal.plan4all.eu, ale opravdu jenom první nástřel. Protože plan4all by měl přiblížit územní plány občanovi, mělo by i zadání takové připomínky být co nejjednodušší. ...

PyWPS as Java Servlet
January 29, 2010 – 10:49 amPyWPS is now able to run as Java Servlet within Tomcat. It is possible to access Java objects from PyWPS and to access PyWPS methods from Java. How this is possible? Several steps have been provided, to get it working. And the main one is, that PyWPS runs with Jython as interpreter. My feeling is, that is is not Python anymore, but Java with Pythonish syntax. Anyway, it looks like little magic to me, but seems to be working. Documentation will follow soon.
Kašpárek rulez!
November 18, 2009 – 1:15 pmV Reflexu psali o projektu Bejbypank a dokonce jsem si na to vzpomněl a na stránku jsem zavítal. Písničky mě nadchly a tak jsem k ježíšku objednal Šťopínovi hned dvě desky, abych vzápětí zjistil, že mají na svých stránkách všecho v MP3. No nic, podpořil jsem dobrý projekt, řekl jsem si. To jsem ovšem ještě netušil, co přijde. Čůrej! Přišly dvě CD, z nichž to první jako "klasické CD" v papírovém (tvrdý karton) obalu - pěkně barevné. Součástí bookletu jsou i noty (tomu říkám Open Source). Ale druhé CD - Kašpárek v rohlíku 2 - přišlo v obalu jako klasická LP deska! A vevnitř byla klasická LP deska! Ono tedy po bližším ohlodání jsem zjistil, že to není deska, ale černý papírový kotouč a na něm je nalepené CDčko, ale stejně - tomu říkám pořádný obal! Ubuntu GIS – THE source of GIS for you
November 11, 2009 – 7:56 amI was providing packages of GIS related software for Ubuntu distributions, because of I was packaging the software for me anyways and I just let them on the server. Many people seemed to be using them, but it is truth, that with the time, I moved from desktop-gis world to web-gis. I had no time to test the software properly and many times it was simply not working. But still, the GRASS 6.4 rc4 for Ubuntu 9.04 was the most commented post on this blog. I will stop now to compile custom packages, at least, until Ubuntu GIS will provide up-to-date packages, which are working. Many thanks to all Ubuntu-GIS people, they are doing a good job. So, now, all who want to have up-to-date software, add deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntugis/ubuntugis-unstable/ubuntu karmic main deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntugis/ubuntugis-unstable/ubuntu karmic main to your /etc/apt/sources.list file (works for jaunty too).
