  5. Hello,
Thanks again for creating these packages.
I actually wonder if all this package creation could not be automatized on a computer running a buildbot and then automatically uploading to launchpad.
Two weeks ago I went through the process of compiling from sources.
It’s all automatically process once we have the dependencies.
As the most stable and best GRASS is in SVN Trunk, there could be an option to have alwas a package with a nightly snapshot.
    What to you think?

By Timmie on May 12, 2009

  6. Timmie: the dependances are changing time to time, so creating any script would be difficult. But if you want to participate, IMHO UbuntuGIS is the right platform to do so.

  8. hello,
I installed ubuntu 9.04. Next I followed the installation instruction of Grass. But I have an error when I try to import vector map with attribute table (.dbf).
The error is: “buffer overflow detected”.

  9. I install grass via synaptic. Synaptic tells that installing is ok. But how can i open grass. It dont come to add/delete programs list

By jarmo on May 25, 2009

  10. jarmo: start terminal and run grass with command grass64, that’s all.

By jachym on May 25, 2009

  11. Thanks for your work, but what about the 64 bit version?

By Christian on May 26, 2009

  12. Christian: I have some advices regarding launchpad usage, so once, I move there, everything will be working for all platforms. Till then,

    sudo apt-get source grass
    cd grass*
    dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot
    sudo dpkg -i ../*grass*deb

    is your friend…

  14. Hi,

why is the hdf4-library not included in gdal-bin 1.6.1 anymore? I had to reInstall gdal-bin 1.5.2 to access my ASTER-HDF satellite-images. Problem: I cannot keep the repos-entry in my /etc/apt/sources.list, because it will reinstall gdal-bin 1.6.1.

    Best regards
    Stefan

  15. I’ll have to look at it

By jachym on Jun 9, 2009

  16. Hi,

for 64 bit version add following repositories to your /etc/apt/sources.list

    deb http://cz.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu karmic main universe

or other Ubuntu package download mirror on

    http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/amd64/grass/download

By pavel on Jun 13, 2009

  17. bat qgis after apdate grass package from this mirror is not running because “segmentation fault”. Can anybody help me with it?

By pavel on Jun 13, 2009

  18. did you upgrade qgis as well?

By jachym on Jun 14, 2009

  19. Hello Jachym,

First THANKS a lot for offering the compiled GRASS for (K)ubuntu!! But I still have some questions:

    1. Why do I have to put QGIS in my sources.list for installing GRASS?

    2. I have QGIS running anyway, but the unstable 1.1 Version, whereas the QGIS repository you recommend is the stable Version; does your compiled GRASS also work with the unstable QGIS?
(I know that in your blog you say that you also compiled the 1.1 version of QGIS … is this in your GRASS repository now anyway? and why did you compile it again; there is already a repository for the unstable version for (K)ubuntu on the QGIS homepage?)

    3. Are the updated versions of GDAL and PROJ4 also necessary for GRASS or do you offer them additionally?

I hope my questions are clear; I would like to install GRASS, but am a little bit afraid to mix up my QGIS.

    Thanks again
    micha

By Micha on Jun 15, 2009

  20. Micha: yes, QGIS 1.1 compiled against grass 6.4 rc is in les-ejk.cz/ubuntu repository. There as new gdal (1.6) too. You should not need qgis repository in sources.list anymore. so, if you add les-ejk.cz/ubuntu to your sources.list and install grass, gdal and qgis from it, it should work together (gras 6.4, qgis 1.1., gdal 1.6)

I know, this is confusing – new versions, one can not combine everything with everything, sometimes something goes wrong… I hope, it all works now.

By jachym on Jun 15, 2009

  21. Thanks for your answer Jachym,

but what happens if I keep QGIS repository in my sources.list (the 1.1 version) and there are updates for this? Should it work or does it crash?
I guess you or anybody can’t be 100% sure… but what you think; as you are the one who compiled it.
For now your compilation of QGIS should be the same as in the repositories, or not?

By Micha on Jun 15, 2009

  22. Hello. I do the apt-get but all I get is grass6.2.3… As I am having problems with this version, I was hoping to solve my problems when I upgraded. I tried it by hand and it didn’t really work out, because it can not find libproj.so.

Hope you can suggest something useful.

    Thanks,

    Miguel

By miguel on Jun 16, 2009

  23. If you got grass 6.2, then you did not setup your /etc/apt/sources.list properly. See http://les-ejk.cz/ubuntu/ for more details.

By jachym on Jun 17, 2009

  24. Maybe you are right and you should remove the qgis repository from your sources list because of this.

The point is: QGIS has to be compiled with specific version of GRASS. I provide more recent GRASS version, than the QGIS repository does, so I have to compile QGIS as well in order, to get everything working (not speeking about MapServer, …).

By jachym on Jun 17, 2009

  25. Dear Jachym,

I did, but I got this when I updated:

    Err http://les-ejk.cz jaunty/multiverse Packages
    404 Not Found
    Fetched 308B in 0s (355B/s)
W: GPG error: http://ppa.launchpad.net jaunty Release: The following signatures couldn’t be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 5227BEBD68436DDF
W: Failed to fetch http://les-ejk.cz/ubuntu/dists/jaunty/multiverse/binary-amd64/Packages 404 Not Found

Then when I apt-get install grass, it automatically installs grass6.2.3.

I think the reason might be that I am a 64 bit, and 6.4 is a 32 bit, isn’t it? I am not a pro on these things, as you can see…

By miguel on Jun 17, 2009

  26. ok, just read the previous comments, I will try the karmic. Anyway, thanks a lot for providing such a nice service to the ubuntu community :)

By miguel on Jun 17, 2009

  27. It should be

    http://les-ejk.cz/ubuntu

By jachym on Jun 17, 2009

  28. If you use the karmic repository, the qgis / grass connection is broken.

I have tried to recompile grass 6.4 RC5 for ubuntu 904 64 bit including the qgis / grass connection, but the apt-get build-dep grass does return the error

E: Build-dependencies for grass could not be satisfied.

P.S.: Remember to add also the source repository (the second line here below!):

    deb karmic main universe
    deb-src karmic main universe

    to fetch the source ….

    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/qgis/ubuntu jaunty main
    deb http://les-ejk.cz/ubuntu jaunty multiverse

    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/qgis/unstable/ubuntu jaunty main
    deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/qgis/unstable/ubuntu jaunty main

when I activate grass plug-in it crashes and I get this message:

/usr/bin/qgis.bin: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libqgisgrass.so.1.3.0: undefined symbol: G_no_gisinit

this is my “dpkg -l|grep grass” response:

ii libgdal1-1.6.0-grass 1.6.0-2 GRASS extension for the GDAL library

ii qgis-plugin-grass-common 1.3.0-1~jaunty6 GRASS plugin for Quantum GIS – architecture-
