14 Responses to “GIS Packages for Ubuntu – no longer necessary?”
Hi!
I got stuck on how to integrate extensions (grassadons). It is necessary to compile them by providing the path to source code of GRASS.
Yet, I was unsuccessful to do that even after installing the source packages.
Any solution?

Have a look at http://logs.qgis.org/grass/%23grass.2007-10-21.log :-)

Maybe gdal compiled with ecw support?? would be useful

Hi Jachym,
I think you’re right… the gutsy packages are fresh and for now they could work properly!
In my honest opinion, I think that you can postpone your repository upgrading and concentrate your efforts when a more stable versione of qgis 0.9 will be available and, especially, when mapserver 0.5 will be available
By Alessio on Oct 26, 2007
Hi, thank you all for comments. You are right. If all GIS packages are more or less up-to-date, they would not be in the future. QGIS is here as well as new GDAL, GRASS will come to 6.3.x version. So, the repository will be setuped soon, so you (we) can use actual packages.
Thanks for the support.

Hi,
I think it will be very usefull to provide GRASS with the most important addons allready installed. A lot of people (like me!) use Ubuntu but are unable to compile programs. In my case I need to use the GIPE addons.
Thanks for your work!

Ops…
in my previous comment I said “Mapserver 0.5”… of course I refer to Mapserver 5! Sorry for the error :)
See you!

Hi,
I quote what Alessio said about Qgis, and thank you for your work.
All the best,
Anne

Hi,
I think GDAL with ecw support would be great; new users, and expacially new ubuntu users like me, don’t feel at home compiling from sources…
Anyway: Jachim, many thanks for all your work.

I’d like to see uDig (even the so called ‘release candidates’) available in the Ubuntu repos.

Hi,
I am using dapper in my laptop. Can I use your feisty repo for a dapper machine. I do not want to update mine to feisty nor gutsy.
Thank you for maintaining this.

#10: Man, that is Java world. It is not that complicated to install uDig on Linux – not compared to C programs, which have to be compiled. Well, if there would be more people asking for uDig packages, I could try to prepare something. But now, I think, it would be only time wasting. BTW: You can try to contact people from Debian-GIS or Ubuntu-GIS project.

#11: Sorry, I started with packaging for edgy. Dapper is too old for me :-(
You can of course download sources (via apt-get source) and compile (dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot) them by your self.
